At Innovation Grind and Polish, we receive a lot of questions about DIY epoxy kits.
Are they easy to apply? Are these products reliable and strong? How much money could I save by doing it myself?
Though DIY epoxy kits may be an inexpensive short-term flooring solution, they often cause more harm than good. Due to inferior product, and a lack of professional equipment and expertise, DIY solutions are often weaker, short-lasting, and prone to cracking.
A professional quality epoxy floor is durable, attractive, and stain-resistant. If you invest in proper installation and treat your floors with care, you’ll reap the benefits for years to come. So avoid the hassles of DIY, and choose a professional installation that’s built to last.
We Use Superior Products
Though DIY garage epoxy kits offer an inexpensive short-term solution, the product itself is significantly weaker and holds a shorter lifespan compared to professional products. Common kit materials from home improvement centres are often made up of 1-part epoxy paint — containing fortified latex or enamel paint and only a small amount of epoxy — which is prone to peeling and chipping.
Other DIY epoxy kits that claim to be “easy to apply” contain a much a lower percentage of solids. Products made of lower solids consist of more carrier agents like water or solvents, and these agents evaporate when the epoxy cures. For example, 50% solids epoxy means that only 50% of the product will remain after the product has cured. Many inexpensive DIY kits have as little as 48% solids… This means minimal thickness, strength, and a much lower quality.
On the other hand, Innovation Concrete uses the 100% solid industrial-strength epoxy and polyaspartic floor coatings that are found in retail warehouses, car plants, and other industrial environments that withstand heavy loads on the regular.
We Prep The Space With Precision
Innovation Concrete works hard to prime your existing concrete surface for maximum epoxy-concrete bonding. This dusty, dirty, and rigorous process uses specialized diamond concrete grinders to remove the top layer of concrete and strip off any preexisting applied coatings or sealants. We add a deep scratch pattern to the concrete so the epoxy adheres to the concrete. This critical step can be costly and tedious to replicate in a DIY scenario.
We Add A Shiny, Scratch-Resistant Layer
Once the epoxy system has hardened, we apply a clear, soft, durable urethane coating that is scratch-, stain-, and chip-resistant. It adds an attractive shine, and protects your floors from the elements. This type of premium coating won’t be found in your traditional DIY epoxy kit.
